Golf GTI or BMW Coupe 320D?

I want to buy a new car and have narrowed my choice to the Volkswagen Golf GTI and BMW 3 Series. I do 12,000 miles a year, which includes a daily commute of 40 miles to London. Given the choice, which car would you buy?

The BMW because it has an 8 speed torque converter transmission, not a 6 speed DSG.
