Where can my son get a small, reliable car for £4000?

My son has a 1996 V6 Auto Omega, bought for a nominal sum from a friend of mine. It has given him 10 months' excellent service, and for about £500 it has just got through another MOT and been serviced. Despite its poor petrol consumption it provides cheap motoring. In a year's time he might be able to buy a new smallish car with long warranty, but would like a contingency plan should a major problem occur in the next six months or so. His requirement would be a 4 or 5-door smallish car that is reliable and cheap to run. Could you suggest suitable models available for around £4000 and suitable 'motormart' places to look?
