Should I pay for a worn steering part after 38k miles?

After 38,000 miles and 3.5 years my Toyota dealer has had to replace the "Top intermediate shaft" on my Prius because of knocking from the steering (cost of £181 parts and £90 labour).

I spoke to their technician who told me this happens fairly frequently on the Prius. Toyota recalled all Prius models before mine for a very similar problem it appears. I've paid the bill to get my car back and asked for the service manager to ring me. Should I challenge this bill in your opinion and if so who with, Dealer or Toyota UK?

Yes, I think you should push for some goodwill from Toyota for this via the dealer, especially if there was a safety recall.

27-6-2011: R/2011/065 Recall of 1,257 Prius models because the nut that secures the pinion to the electric power steering system motor shaft may become loose if excessive force is used in full lock manoeuvrers. This could, in extreme cases, have an affect on the steering operation.

3-12-2012: R/2012/145: Further recall of Prius, Corolla and Avensis because it is possible that the splines of the extension shaft on vehicles equipped with Electric Motor assisted Power Steering (EMPS) may not have received the correct hardness treatment. This can cause the spline to distort and wear and eventually result in loss of steering. Remedy: Recall affected vehicles, check and if necessary replace the shaft.
