Buying a new car - suitable for tall family with newly qualified 18 year old to drive

We currently own a Vauxhall Zafira SR1 and a Peugeot 308 1.6 Hdi Sport. Our 18 year old son who is going to university in the autumn had just passed his test and we would like him to drive the family car.

We currently cannot get insurance from our current insurer (Direct Line) until a year after he has passed his test because our existing cars are Sport and Sri models. We all need to use the car, it will have to do motorway driving most days and our son will be an occasional driver, we are thinking of swapping the Peugeot for a newer 308, ideally a diesel with low road tax.

Have you any suggestions as to a suitable car to fit our requirements?

Pretty simple really. if you like 308s, then get one with the same 1.6HDI engine that your insurer will insure your son to drive. You'll find a no 'Sport' on sensible 195/65 R15 or 205/55 R16 tyres had a lot more comfortable ride quality too.
