What's the law on in-car cameras?

Can you tell me where I can legally place an in-car camera? I want to fit one to my dashboard, but don’t know the rules on such things.

It can't be within the swept area of the wipers, but if the lens is wide angle, placing it at the bottom of the screen will film mostly bonnet. I've got mine at the top of the screen next to the rear view mirror and sensor box, but since it is completely covered by the sunvisor when that is flapped down they have no argument that it obscures my vision.
