Engine cut out on motorway - what's the cause?

When accelerating to overtake, the engine of my Jaguar X-Type 2.0 diesel cuts out without warning. The power steering dies and the engine stalls, forcing me onto the hard shoulder to restart the car. The car then runs normally, until the next time I put my foot down a little too heavily on the accelerator. Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

It may well be one of the many sensors fitted to the car that is faulty.
The best and quickest way to identify which one,is to have a diagnostic check carried out. This should then show up a fault code ( ie P ---- 4 numbers) which can then be related to the problem.

If you do not want to carry out a diagnostic then would suggest that you check the cam sensor and also the crankshaft sensor, both of which could cause this problem.
