What's the best used car for high mileage use?

My son commutes 50,000 miles per year, mostly on motorways. He currently has a 2004 Vauxhall Astra diesel estate, but as the mileage has racked up he is considering getting something else. He likes Fords, what would you recommend he buys?

A Ford Fiesta EcoNetic on 14-inch wheels will be the most economical Ford.
