How can I become a car journalist?

Can you tell me the best route into car journalism? I really want to get into the business of reviewing cars and/or working for a publication or website like yours. I've noticed that there's no careers section to HonestJohn.co.uk (not that I would expect one) but without obvious journalistic experience I am unsure what’s the best route in. Do you have any advice?

You have to do it yourself. How I broke in was by pitching a magazine idea 'The Truth About Cars' to Haymarket and EMAP. Haymarket took me on and fed me scraps to keep me quiet and I continued to support myself by trading cars.

I got the big break with The Telegraph. Built up 'Car by Car Breakdown' for five years. And in year 2000 turned that into a website which is pretty much what 'The Truth About Cars' was all about. Be prepared to work 18 hours a day, seven days a week though.
