Buying a Volvo XC90 - which engine is best?

I'm looking at purchasing a used Volvo XC90 (diesel) but don't want one with a DPF. I'm also unsure about the engine size - is the V8 worth the extra money or is the D5 sufficient?

Any XC90 rated as EU4 will have a DPF. The V8 has no DPF because it's a petrol engine. The I6 was also a petrol engine with no DPF. For issues see: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volvo/xc90-2002/?sec...d
