What's causing my power steering to screech?

I had a service a few months back, but ever since then my power steering has been making screeching noises every time I make a turn. I kept going back to the garage (solo mechanic) and asking about it, but he said it wasn't doing any harm. Someone in a car park heard it and said it was the power steering fluid.

I checked the fluid and it was low, but even after topping it up the car still makes a grinding noise. What long term damage might I have done and could the whirring be connected too? I have been driving it with the screeching for about two months.

The screeching is usually the belt slipping, but if it's been going on for two months is more likely to be a failed bearing in the PAS pump.
