Insurer won't let me buy back my written-off car - what can I do?

Two weeks ago I was sat in traffic when I was hit in the rear. Obviously, the accident was not my fault, but my 2004 Vauxhall Astra has been declared a write-off.

Bar a creased floorpan, the damage is light and cosmetic, but my insurer is being very inert and unhelpful. I want to buy the car back and get the difference as a settlement, but they’re refusing to help. Can you provide any advice?

They either have to offer you the write off value of the car minus the salvage value or chase the other party's insurer for this. Or chase the other party's insurer to fix the car. But a creased floorpan is serious. Maybe not repairable for the settlement figure.
