Can you recommend a reliable and efficient second hand diesel hatchback?

I need a comfortable, reliable and efficient diesel hatchback for a weekly commute from Leeds to Birmingham. I have around £8000 to spend for a second hand model. Any suggestions?

Honda Civic is probably best because a 2.2 iCTDI is timing chain so no belt to replace and none of them were ever fitted with a DPF. But the 1.8i petrol is almost as efficient, giving me 45mpg on the sort of journey you describe.
