We're thinking of buying a Volkswagen Golf or SEAT Leon automatic - are the DSG automatics any good?

We want an automatic, economical diesel. The Volkswagen Golf 1.6 105bhp and the similar new SEAT Leon are of interest, because the i30 Hyundai do not have the essential cruise control. What comments do you have with the DSG box?

The DSG box is one of the best automatic gearboxes around. As you probably know, it uses two clutches, so the changes are incredibly quick but also very smooth. We've driven the DSG (with seven speeds now!) with the 1.6 TDI (105bhp) engine and it's an excellent combination that's also very economical. We have heard of one or two problems with DSG gearboxes on the previous Golf (mainly when fitted to the 1.4 TSI engine) but nothing that is of major concern.

Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
