Can GATSO speed cameras only be used when capturing speeding vehicles from the rear?

I was recently caught speeding by a forward-facing GATSO camera. I have read in various places that GATSO's were never type-approved by the Home Office to be used forward facing, and may only be used when they capture the back of a car. Is this true? If it is, would I be wise in raising an appeal on the grounds that forward-facing GATSO's are not type-approved, and therefore, evidence gained by them is invalid?

A list of all type-approved speed cameras is available from here: tna.europarchive.org/20100419081706/http://www.pol...l

Whether this list will change as a result of the new Coalition Government is unclear at the moment.
