Should I fit star rated tyres to my BMW X5?

I need two new tyres on my BMW X5, sizes are 285/45/19 I've spoken to my local garage and they have mentioned star rated tyres. Is it wise to differ from the tyres BMW recommends, or will it cause damage if I fit cheaper rubber?

If you mess about with tyres on this you will get into all kinds of trouble. Stick rigidly to the BMW recommended tyres.
