Why is my AA renewal price so high?

Our Gold AA Membership cards arrived last week, but there was no renewal price included. I phoned the company and was told the renewal price was £302. Whilst on the phone to them I got a quote from their website as a new member for £260.

At the end of the call I was offered renewal at £180, but I was so annoyed that I cancelled my Direct Debit before they could take the money and signed up with another company.

Why do they not offer their customers the lowest renewal price to start with? I’ve been with the AA for 19 years and cannot believe they tried to rip me off!

The AA and RAC are now owned by Private Equity finance. This is how they operate to maximise revenue. If a customer threatens to leave, they then reduce the price, but only then.
