How can I prove my car didn’t roll back and hit another vehicle?

I parked at a leisure centre recently and returned to find a note on my car saying it had rolled back and damaged their Mercedes-Benz. My car was in the same place I left it, but the note said they had pushed my vehicle back into the parking space after it hit their vehicle.

The person came about 15 minutes later and showed me some scratches on his fibre bumper. I could not identify any damage to his car as it was about 9.30 pm in the night. He said he would go the insurance and his insurer will call me.

Is this my fault? I am still not aware how my car rolled back, and how it was at the the same place when I returned.

If you did not leave your car in gear (or, if it's an automatic, in 'Park') then the parking brake may not have held it and it could have rolled back. On the other hand, the Mercedes owner may already have had some damage he wanted repairing and saw this as an opportunity to rip off you and your insurer for the cost. If there is any CCTV footage of the incident, then that will tell the true story.
