Do air conditioning units lose gas over time?

I have been told by a dealer that air condition systems loose 10 per cent of their gas every year, is this correct?

It's an approximation, but yes. The gas gradually seeps out of the seals in the system; more so during the winter if the a/c is not used because the lubricants are suspended in the refrigerant and if this is not regularly pumped through the system the seals dry out.
