Has there been a conclusive ruling covering undertaking on multi-lane roads?

In your column on Saturday, under "Left right, left right" you covered the topic of undertaking on multi-lane roads. I recall this being discussed some time ago in the press and reference was made to a court case in which the judge had ruled that each lane was effectively a one-way street, thus overtaking on the inside was permitted. Unfortunately the article did not quote details of the case - do you have any knowledge of this?

There is a judgement, but frustratingly no one seems able to locate it or at what level of court it was. Ideally, we need a sensible Supreme Court ruling because that then becomes the law of the land and prevents stroppy coppers and idiot magistrates doing drivers for 'dangerous driving' when their driving was anything but. Of course we could end up with a completely stupid and impractical Supreme Court judgement, but it would still be law.
