Which 4x4 pick-up do you recommend for high mileage work purposes?

I am thinking of buying a new or nearly new 4x4 automatic twin-cab pick-up. I have searched the web and reviews for Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Mazda are all very similar. My requirement is off-road ability, obviously, but I travel on average seven or eight hundred miles a week, mainly on motorways and dual carriageways. Load carrying isn't a priority but I have two dogs that travel with me when I am working hence the need for a covered pick-up. Also I would like something a bit more athletic than my current transport, an old Discovery TD5.

Actually the new Ford Rodeo pick-up is the best of the bunch. The best previous generation pick-up is the Isuzu D-Max / Chevrolet Colorado with the 2.5 or 3.0 I-TEQ 16v diesel engine, sold in the UK as the Isuzu Rodeo. It also has the nicest manual gearbox. We've got two in Thailand. There are lots of aftermarket ‘Carryboy’ windowed van backs for the load area. Expect about 36mpg on the road from the 4WD manual. Most automatic pickups are awful to drive and considerably juicier, but you can get a Rodeo auto.
