How does the Honda Jazz's i-Shift work?

Can you please explain how the i-Shift in a 2008-2010 Jazz works in practice? Do you have a choice between fully automatic and using the steering wheel paddles to change, or must one always use the paddles? I saw your video road test in which you remarked that the i-Shift was surprisingly smooth. What were you doing? With the i-Shift, if one wants to accelerate away briskly, what happens?

Like any automated manual, the i-Shift damps the throttle on upchanges to prevent damage to the lower gears. Unfortunately, when this happens, some drivers try to compensate by pressing the accelerator harder, and this is what leads to the uncomfortable lurching effect. For smooth progress you need to feel for the changes and lift slightly as they occur, or simply take it very gently. For maximum acceleration yes, you have to switch to manual and use the paddles.
