Why should winter tyres be fitted to steel rims?

I bought my daughter some winter tyres for her Yaris in December as an added safety feature and, having followed your column, I see that you advise fitting them to steel rims. When we had the winter tyres fitted we were not given any recommendation to fit steel rims as well. Can you explain why you are advising to fit winter tyres to steel rims?

They are more robust and you do not get your summer alloys damaged by road salt, which is the main cause of blistered and scabrous alloys.
