Which 4x4 SUV performs well in winter conditions?

We have a 2004 Audi A4 Avant Sport 1.9TDi 130PS with 55,000 miles on the clock which we were thinking of replacing with a 4x4, as we live in a semi-rural area and the Audi has struggled in the ice and snow of recent winters. But, having read your advice to other readers, we are now planning on simply putting on winter tyres. The only thing that worries us - again, on the basis of your responses to other queries - is whether the age of the car, its diesel engine and low mileage mean we are in store for big bills.

We had been contemplating a Land Rover Freelander or a Volvo XC60. We have two children aged six and two, so we need reasonable space but don't want a monstrous vehicle that will melt what little is left of the ice caps.

You won't have a diesel particulate filter to worry about on your Audi, but at seven years it is getting old. Winter tyres advice here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/winter-tyres

This winter there has been strong demand for 4WDs so used prices are high and very few discounts on new ones. With all of them, you have to make sure it is actually 4WD, as many are now sold as 2WD. Think: Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4D-4D 4WD, Suzuki SX4 1.6 petrol or 2.0 diesel 4WD, forthcoming Mazda CX5 4WD, Nissan Qashqai 4WD, Hyundai ix35 4WD, KIA Sportage 4WD, Toyota RAV4 4WD, Honda CR-V (all are 4WD), Land Rover Freelander 2 4WD, Audi Q3 4WD or the Skoda Octavia Scout 4WD.
