Pull the other one

I need to look for a replacement for our 1996 Peugeot 405 GLXD Turbo estate which we have had since 1999, not because there is anything wrong with it but because the weight and power are both well short of the optimum to tow our caravan (MTPLM 1,100 Kilos) and now being retired we would like to do longer trips.

We are not worried about keeping up with the Joneses need so something maybe five to seven years old with space for a dog cage and a seating position which enables my wife, who is relatively short, to see over the dashboard and reach the pedals is needed.

The Volkswagen Passat has a good write-up as a towing car but my wife requires cushions to sit on to see past the steering wheel and dashboard, even with the seat in the raised position. We have around £10,000 available and would prefer a diesel.

Buying a Mondeo Mk III 2.0TDCI estate (2001 - 2007) avoids diesel particulate filter problems and will save you a lot of money. But I'd go for a 2006 - 2009 Honda CR-V 2.2iCTDI as that does not have a diesel particulate filter, does have the weight, and has the height your wife requires.
