Son motors

My son is about to turn 17 and I am looking to buy a small car for him. I don’t want to spend more that £1,000 and I need a car that is: Safe; Cheap as possible to insure; Simple to repair (I want him to learn about car maintenance); Reasonable fuel economy; Cheap spares. I was thinking about a Ford Fiesta or a Vauxhall Corsa, but can you suggest anything better?

For £1,000, little of that can be guaranteed. Do not buy from a dealer because the dealer will have between £500 and £750 profit in the car. Best to look as postcard ads in newsagent's windows and buy privately. Or, if you're brave, buy at the lower end of a part exchange auction, making sure that the car is a p/x direct from a dealer and has not gone through the trade. It is likely to be a Fiesta 1.25 16v (NOT a 1.3 8v). I'm not a fan of cheap Corsas. Also talk to a few classic car insurers such as www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk , www.manorinsurance.co.uk , and www.footmanjames.co.uk to see if there is any way in via a small classic such as a Morris Minor. The car will cost a lot more, but is very self maintenance, and the cost of car plus insurance may be less than for a more modern car.
