Which high-performance car would you recommend?

After 12 years in Hong Kong we will be returning to the UK in the beginning of 2013. I would like to make up for lost time when back in the UK and have something fun that I look forward to driving. Two seaters are out as we have a son and I would like us to be able to travel together at weekends, etc.

I have considered a second hand Maserati GT but would probably only just be able to manage a secondhand one with about 25,000 miles. However, would it make more sense to go for something new or nearly new like a Jaguar XFR? Is there something along the above lines you would recommend instead? Having decided what to get where is the best place to buy?

A Jaguar XFR is a truly great car and, as well as having more than 500PS, can also be surprisingly economical. 29mpg is possible when cruising at 80mph on the motorway. Any Mercedes with the 6.2-litre AMG '63' engine is awesome, but drinks fuel. You could also consider a BMW E92 M3 V8 coupe, but they take a lot of skill to get the most from. An E92 335i manual is enough for most drivers (including me). This type of car is usually best bought from a franchise, because if it has escaped to the trade you have to wonder why. Wonderful and bespoke feeling interior. Amazingly quiet and refined. More economical 2.2 diesel from 2011. Navigation not fitted as standard on most models.
Brilliant to drive, powerful and fuel-efficient engines, good interior space and practicality.
