Can this Mercedes-Benz B180 gearbox fault be fixed cheaply?

My son has owned a 2006 Mercedes-Benz B180 diesel automatic from new, now showing 80,000 miles. A fault has developed where the car will not change gear and the dashboard message refers the car to a workshop visit. If the engine is switched off and restarted the fault clears for a further few miles. A diagnostic check has been carried out by a local Mercedes dealer who has quoted a replacement gearbox at approximately £3500.
