Is my Ford Mondeo wearing tyres faster than normal?

My Mondeo Titanium five-door hatch is coming up for three years old and 20,000 miles. At a recent check-up I was dismayed to be told that the front tyres had only 1000 miles at most left on them. I was surprised by the comment of the service advisor: "Well sir, it is a Mondeo and they eat tyres". What is the reason for this?

20,000 miles is normal to good for a Mondeo, as it is for most front-wheel drive cars. But any car on 18-inch wheels with 40 profile tyres will go through the tyres faster than one on 16-inch wheels with 55 profile tyres.
