Has our Volvo XC60 got a battery fault?

My Volvo XC60 D5 (205) SE Lux Premium AWD Geartronic was purchased on 24 July 2010. At the beginning of August 2011 I couldn't drive for some eight weeks, and in the third week of August I started and ran the engine whilst stationary for about 15 minutes but did not try again to start the engine for another five weeks. When I did so, the battery would not start the engine and it effectively expired. I had to call out home start to jump-start the car and then drove the car locally for about one hour, but the next day the engine wouldn't turn over again. I had a second jump-start call out to take me to the dealer where we bought the car so that the battery and car could be checked.

A new battery was required (and was fitted) and there was no identified problem with the vehicle. This was on 5 October 2011, which meant the first battery lasted only some 14 months. This year we went away for a 4-week break, leaving our vehicle in our underground car park. When I tried to open the car nothing was working, including the alarm. Today I picked up the car and was told that the battery had been recharged ok and that after appropriate testing, nothing was found to be a problem with the car. Is the battery on this car fit for purpose?

The first scenario could easily have wrecked the first battery. In the second, if the car has not been taken for an adequate run of 15 miles or more immediately before it was tucked away, then that might not have left enough charge to compensate for normal battery drain-down over four weeks. Basically if the car had been used only for short runs before you went on holiday it would have been put away with a battery already partially or mostly discharged, and the systems that remain functioning when the car is stored would have finished it off.
