Engine management warning light keeps coming on.

Garage diagnostic indicates carburation problem bur none can be found and resetting removes warning light for about a month then comes back on at start up. Repeated several times, same result and garage suggests possible fault with sensors in exhaust system. Engine will not pull below 1750 rpm even in first and will stall if heavy footed on accelerator. Any ideas ?

Can you confirm that it is a 1955 car, as we would not have thought it had a engine management warning light (not in 1955).
