Which economical used family car?

We are looking to buy a used family car (we currently have a 53 plate Meriva which we have been pleased with, but a bit basic). Can you suggest some family cars that are economical for around £10,000 that are only 1 or 2 years old max. We are a family of 4, do about 8,000 miles a year max, would like low car tax and running/maintenance costs.

We like the Vauxhall Astra and know the 1.4T 140 is the better engine, but can you tell me why and is the turbo an issue, as we always believed turbos could be very costly.

The Astra 1.4T 140 is simply the best engine in the Astra line up. Chain cam so no timing belt to replace every 4 years. No turbo trouble I've heard of. And you can get the same engine in the current Meriva, that might suit you better: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/vauxhall/vauxhall-.../
