Why aren't all cars front wheel drive?

Why are cars still made with rear wheel drive? For years I have driven front wheel drive Saabs on snow with ease using standard tyres. Now it is time to say goodbye to my 13 year old Saab 9-5 and my wife refuses to look at a used Lexus IS because it is rear wheel drive.

I've shown her your articles on winter tyres but it has made no difference. Can you recommend a reliable front wheel drive equivalent to the Lexus? I have up to £10,000 to spend on a comfortable automatic with ample boot space.
