Pump doesn't stop automatically when filling up

When you insert the nozzle and fill the tank, the pump doesn't automatically stop it just fills the tank and then floods the forecourt with petrol. What could be the cause of this?

This is my girlfriend's car and its done it since she had it, its a V reg.

The fuel should splash into the nozzle and that should activate the cut-off. But since you have a problem the best thing to do is listen to the gurgling of the fuel going in to the tank. The sound changes as it starts to fill the filler pipe.
