Buying a Honda Civic - petrol or diesel.?

My 2005 Honda Type S has covered 200k without hitch. The 2.0-litre chain cam engine is perfect. I do 25-30k per year, mostly motorway, and I am thinking of getting a replacement Honda Civic as the dealer service is above excellent.

The new 2012 Civic is expensive for what it is. I had thought of getting a 2011 style Civic as prices look good. Given that I will be covering similar mileage, intend to keep for 8-10 years would you advise the 1.8-litre petrol or 2.2-litre diesel?

I have read your columns extensively with respect to modern diesel engines. Reliability is paramount. That said what other car makes would you consider. I am a single driver and need a smallish comfortable car. Budget is £25,000. available.

Wow. I always thought these were excellent cars and you have just confirmed it. Lately I've had good experiences of the Civic 1.8i: 45mpg in the previous shape; 48mpg in the new shape. I reckon that's pretty good for a 1.8 petrol engine. Bargain of the auction yesterday was a 24k miles 08 Civic 1.8iSE, sold for £5400.
