Hyunda five-year warranty - just how effective is it?

An elderly Italian lady friend bought a new Hyundai i20 11 months ago attracted by the 5 year warranty and service given. O

n a recent trip (5000 miles on the clock), the clutch went and she claimed on the warranty only to be told by Hyundai that the clutch wore out due to improper use and she had to pay £680 for a new one. She was insulted by the inference as she has never had a problem with any previous car concerning clutches. Photos of the clutch were provided with no explanation and attempts to get recompense by writing to the MD Hyundai UK were met with the advice that there was no manufacturing defect therefore she was liable for the cost as it was wear and tear. In this day and age it is inconceivable for a clutch to wear out after 5000 miles even if she did drive with foot on the clutch pedal which she most certainly did not. Is there any further action she can take to get Hyundai to face up to the fact that their components can and do go wrong and not try to wriggle out of an obligation by insulting the driver? I see from the web that this is not the first time this situation with Hyundai and clutches has arisen.

It is actually possible to completely destroy a clutch in 15 minutes. I get a couple of emails a week about elderly people who have suddenly suffered a clutch failure after never having had one before in their entire lives. i20 clutches aren't brilliant and don't have a perfect track record, but it's also true that as people become older they don't have the same control of their limbs that they had when they were younger.
