Winter Tyres ... my friend has a theory

I have been persuaded by your (and other) advice on winter tyres and now switch over every winter.

I do believe that my rear wheel drive BMW is better for it, and the cost of switching over twice per year (with BMW storing).

A friend has a new four-wheel drive Bentley, and contends that the ABS and ESP on his car are so effective (and better than that fitted on less expensive cars) that they effectively negate the need for winter tyres. Do you think that is the case? Do you generally advise four-heel drive owners to switch?

If we get any serious snow then that will put your friend's theory to the test, won't it? Don't look too smug if he asks you to to come out and pick him up after he's spun off through a hedge.
