For driving in the snow, the main priority should be the tyres. All-wheel drive traction might help a bit, but generally, we'd expect a two-wheel drive car on winter tyres to provide superior traction to an AWD car wearing summer tyres, and perhaps most importantly, provide significantly better braking performance to any car on summer tyres. Of course, AWD and winters will be even better in terms of traction.

Given how infrequently it snows in the UK, we wouldn't recommend buying a car specifically for that purpose, but should it be an important factor for you, the car we'd steer you towards would depend on your other wants and needs. That being said, something like a Dacia Duster (on winter tyres, of course) could prove to be a useful car in icy and snowy conditions, whether it's two or four-wheel drive.
