Faulty Renault Scenic air con.

I have been told by a garage that my air-conditioning unit in my Scenic 2006 needs replacing (ball bearings?). I could hear noise (Whining) and the garage checked and diagnosed a fault with air-conditioning.

I don't know a lot about cars but was shocked when garage quoted up to £1000.00 repair cost. Does this sound right? I was told I can drive the car without the use of air-conditioning until they get parts.

A/c compressor pumps are quite expensive, but go to an independent a/c specialist and he may be able to secure one much more cheaply either new of recovered from a wreck.
