Smokey BMW 320d

My diesel 320d started emitting white smoke suddenly one day. One mechanic told me to put diesel fuel injector cleaner in it and service the car. It solved the problem a little bit. But I wanted it further investigated so I took it to an independent garage.

They serviced it and cleaned the EGR Valve and told me that CAT converter is faulty. I was not very satisfied with their advice and took it to another garage and they told me that turbo was faulty and needed replacement.

The car start emitting white smoke after few minutes of driving, and there's more when it's standing still. It reduces when driving and looks like it is consuming engine oil as well.

Well white smoke indicates that the fuel being injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. (The smoke normally burns your eyes)

We would have thought that the garage/s would have carried out a diagnostic check at a early stage, which could then have identified the fault by code. I.E. P ---- 4 numbers.

Are you sure that it is white and not blue??
Blue indicates engine oil burning, and could be worn cylinders/piston rings, faulty valves or valve stem seals, faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel.

Other than that you should check
1.ECT ( engine coolant temp sensor)
2.Turbo wastegate regulating valve
3.Turbo wastegate
4.FRP ( fuel rail pressure sensor)
5.FRP control valve

Given what you have been told so far, you may want to go to the HJ website and look under "good garages" near you and get them to check it out
