How do I measure my fuel economy?

How much fuel does each bar on the fuel gauge represent as I seem to only be getting 34mpg.
Example I have done 115 miles on half a tank (3.5 gallons) which is really bad, the car is a few weeks old and has done 260 miles so far

The only way is to brim the tank and write the mileage on your fuel receipt and keep it. Then next time you fill up, brim the tank again and write the mileage on your fuel receipt. Subtract the first mileage from the second. Multiply the fuel in litres on the 2nd receipt by .22 to get gallons. Then divide the mileage by the gallons used.
