Volvo S60 D3 choice - SE or R-design - or neither?

Would your recommend this Volvo as a suitable replacement for the Passat Estate I have driven for 11 years from new, or would you suggest another alternative marque?

Have driven the S60 D3 R-design, but not the SE. Is there a great deal of difference in handling and general performance? Your current view of this car will be appreciated!

SE is softer and much more sensible than an R-Design. Altogether more pleasant to drive. The D3 is Volvo's own 2.0 litre 5-cylinder diesel.
