What economical car?

I have just moved house and we are using our cars differently. I need to replace out city runaround, an 03 plate fiesta with 150k on the clock with a decent motorway car. I need it to be economical, so in my mind a diesel may be better. I like the look of the Volvo C30, possibly a Golf or something of similar size.

I am not sure what millage to look for or what pitfalls to avoid. I would need to get a loan for the car, so in my head somewhere between 5k-7k seems sensible. We already run a Saab 93 estate (07) so don't need anything too big.

A Fiesta 1.6TDCI 90 would make more sense than a Focus or an altogether more expensive car like a C30.
