A6 or XC90?

I have narrowed down my choices to the Audi A6 3L Quattro (2005/2006) or Volvo XC90 2.4D (2005/2006).

We live in a rural area in France which has 6 to 8 weeks of snow and ice so need an AWD car but also good for cruising 1400 miles on bi monthly return trips to the UK.

Which would you recommend for reliability, comfort and all weather driving?
