Temporary loss of power when turning on the lights

My Son in Law has been experiencing a loss of power when turning the lights on in his A3, the engine recovers in about 30 seconds? A duff alternator, or an intermittent fault with a regulator, or a smart box?

Will be the alternator trying to produce enough power to recharge the battery and light the lights. 9 years is already quite a good life for a VAG alternator.
