Megane or Focus?

I am after a car on a budget and wondered if you could help.

I have about £7000 - £8000 and would like a car used for some mild motorway driving either petrol or diesel, no real preference, and would also like a car no older than 3 years.

I have narrowed my search to either a Focus or Megane, however I'm open to suggestions.

I would like at least a 1.4 and a safe reliable car too please (not asking too much am I?!)

Could you please help suggest a car and summaries the main differences between them.

I hope I have provided you enough information, if not please let me know.

In the UK a Megane is unjustifiably unpopular so prices are lower than Focus. The suspension is not as sophisticated as that of a Focus, but it still rides very well. Very few problems.
