buying new car - recommendations for good mileage, environmentally sound, turbo feel, a bit funky

Have a 2003 Citroen C3 manual 1.4 diesel - which I love. However, it is getting a bit old and a bit small for our needs. I commute to work some 30 minutes each way, run errands, drive teens.

Occasional 1 - 1.5 hour drives usually in hot weather. Can you advise if you would recommend I get the citroen c3 picasso or skoda yeti? And - diesel or petrol? Manual or "robotic"/automatic?

Note I recently read research that has shown a high link between diesel car emissions and lung cancer. Any news on this?

Better a 1.2 turbo petrol, for example a Skoda Yeti 1.2TSI 105.
