Car making noise after being at mechanics

I had cam belt replaced by a garage and since then I keep getting a knocking noise. Today I checked under the car and the nearside drive shaft moves freely and knocks when pushed. The mechanic has been telling me he doesn't think it could be as a result of anything he did, but car went through an MoT at a different garage a week before the cam belt was replaced and both drive shafts were fine at the time. Could the mechanic have damaged the drive shaft?

If it's the same side as the timing belt it depends what he had to do to get the new belt on.
