Second hand car for £8k

My wife and I are downsizing from a Volkswagen Transporter to something more practical. We have a budget of about £8,000, and would like a large, fuel efficient hatchback which will retain its value, as we may move overseas soon. After reading reviews, we are looking at a Volkswagen Golfs and Audi A3s (diesel models), but would welcome your advice.

Audi A3s have retained values well. The most reliable diesel engine in them is the 1.9 TDI not the 2.0 TDI or the newer 1.6 TDI.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.
