Which wheels and tyres for a 2010 3 Series

The alloys factory fitted to this vehicle are 17 inch V spoke style 285. Tyres are Bridgestones 225/45 R 17. I have covered only 17,000 miles and the rear tyres will shortly need replacing.

A neighbour has offered me some new BMW alloys 17inch as follows: 8J x 17inch, 225/45 R17 at front & 8.5J x 17 inch, 255/40R17 tyres at rear; these are fitted with virtually new Bridgestone RE050A low profile run flat tyres.

Q1 Can I safely fit these on my vehicle ??
Q2 Will the puncture warning light on the dash display work with this change ?
Q3 How does this function work ?
Q4 Why am I only getting some 17000 miles from these Bridgestone tyres when previous cars I have owned eg Mercedes & Honda covered approaching 50,000 miles on a set of tyres.

Your low tyre mileage is because these are wide, low profile tyres. Switching to the neighbour's wheels and tyres will only make the wear rate increase, will make the ride harder, will increase tramlining and will make the tyres and rims even more subject to damage. The best wheels size for a 320d is 16" with 205/55 R16 tyres.
