Left in no doubt

The rule I have always used when driving in the left hand lane of a motorway is No 167 of my Highway Code otherwise it would mean braking when nothing is in front of me if lanes to the right of me slow down. Rule 102 also mentions overtaking on the left. Thank you for giving cyclists (me) room when overtaking, however many drivers do this but cut in too soon forcing me to brake or squash me against the road edge. Lack of roadcraft is the cause of much grief for all on our roads and it is not taught or shown by driving schools I have noticed. I agree with all your comments except that I am of the old school of courteous road users and I advocate flashing headlights as a helpful addition to driving. It helps long vehicles to pull in after overtaking for example.

I'll concede that in the situation you describe, a flash is not likely to be misinterpreted and is helpful to the driver of a long HGV.
